A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry's landmark classic that
"changed the face of American theatre forever," is scheduled to take
the stage of the Boyd Vance Theatre at the Carver Musuem. After
performing to rave reveiws in Dallas, the Sankofa Players are taking
their production on the road to Austin.
The Tony Award-winning A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of the
Younger family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the
1950s when their lives are turn upside after recieve a large insurance
cash payout. A fiercely moving portrait of people whose hopes and
dreams are constantly deferred, Ms. Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun was
the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on
Broadway. It premiered in 1959 with a cast that included Sidney
Poitier, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett Jr. The critically acclaimed work
was honored with the 1959 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best
American play.
ABC is set to broadcast a televised version of A Raisin in the Sun starring the cast from the 2004 Broadway appearance which includes Sean Combs, Phylicia Rashad, Audra McDonald, Sanaa Lathan and John Stamos. Click here to view the preview.
A Raisin in the Sun will have two performances on Saturday, January 12, 2008, in the Boyd Vance Theater at the Carver Museum, located at 1165 Angelina St. There is a matinée performance at 2:30 PM and an evening performance at 7:00PM.
Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Sankofa Players.
